Kerkmusicus
Als kerkmusicus is Maurice van Elven vanaf het begin in zowel Protestantse als Rooms-Katholieke kerk werkzaam geweest. Hij volgde aan het conservatorium van de ‘Vereniging Muzieklyceum’ de destijds nog gescheiden opleidingen Protestantse (docent Frits Mehrtens) en Rooms-Katholieke kerkmuziek (docent Bernard Huijbers). Hij was reeds tijdens zijn opleiding als cantor-organist verbonden aan de Deutsche Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Amsterdam, in dezelfde periode was hij één van de organisten aan de Parochie O.L.V. Koningin van de Vrede, eveneens te Amsterdam.
In januari 1982 werd hij benoemd als dirigent-organist aan de Kloosterkerk St. Antonius van Padua (Tichelkerk), de kerk van de Minderbroeders Kapucijnen aan de Amsterdamse Lijnbaansgracht. In 1994 richtte hij de Gregoriaanse schola ‘Vox Lucina’ en het meerstemmig vrouwenkoor PROSA Vocaal Ensemble op. Deze beide koren verzorgden naast het reeds bestaande kerkkoor (Tichelkoor) regelmatig de zang tijdens de vieringen op zondagmorgen. Maurice van Elven bekleedde deze functie tot de sluiting van de Tichelkerk op 1 december 2004. Het Tichelkoor en de schola Vox Lucina moesten hierdoor worden ontbonden, het PROSA Vocaal Ensemble maakte een doorstart en is nog steeds aktief. (zie verderop)
Na korte tijd werkzaam te zijn geweest aan de Parochie St. Pancratius te Amsterdam-Sloten is Maurice van Elven sinds oktober 2005 als cantor-organist verbonden aan de Thomaskerk (PKN) te Amsterdam-Zuid. Deze funktie behelst het bespelen van het orgel tijdens de diensten op zondagochtend, het geven van leiding aan de gemeentezang, en het leiden van de Thomascantorij. De Thomascantorij is een zanggroep van ca. 10 leden, zij ondersteunt de Thomasgemeente bij de zang, zingt de voorzang bij wisselzangen en heeft een eigen repertoire.

Church musician
As a church musician Maurice van Elven has worked from the outset in both Protestant and Roman Catholic churches. At the conservatory ‘Vereniging Muzieklyceum’ he followed courses in Protestant (under Frits Mehrtens) and Roman Catholic (under Bernard Huijbers) church music: at that time, these were separate studies. As a student he was already cantor-organist to the Deutsche Evangelische Kirchengemeinde in Amsterdam, and during the same period he was one of the organists in the parish of O.L.V. Koningin van de Vrede (Our Lady Queen of Peace), also in Amsterdam.
In January 1982 he was appointed as conductor-organist to the monastery church of St. Anthony of Padua (the ‘Tichelkerk’), the church of the Franciscan Capuchin monks on the Lijnbaansgracht in Amsterdam. In 1994 he founded the Gregorian choir ‘Vox Lucina’ and the women’s choir PROSA Vocaal Ensemble. In addition to the existing church choir (Tichelkoor), these two choirs regularly provided the vocal music during the Sunday morning church services. Maurice van Elven retained this post until the closure of the Tichelkerk on 1 December 2004. Because of this closure, the Tichelkoor and Vox Lucina had to be disbanded; PROSA Vocaal Ensemble began anew and is still active (see below).
After a short period as cantor-organist in the parish of St. Pancratius in Amsterdam-Sloten, Maurice van Elven was appointed cantor-organist in the Thomaskerk (PKN) in Amsterdam-South. This position involves playing the organ during the services on Sunday morning, leading the congregation in song, and leading the Thomascantorij. The Thomascantorij is a group of about 10 singers who support the congregation in song, sing the lead part in alternating chants, and have their own repertoire.

Docent Muziek
Als docent muziek houdt Maurice van Elven zich bezig met het geven van orgellessen op alle niveaus, van beginner tot en met het coachen van zowel Prot. als R.K. amateur-kerkorganisten. Naast zijn docentschap aan de Muziekschool Noord (1974-1997) en de Muziekschool Amsterdam (1975-heden) heeft hij cursussen kerkelijk orgelspel verzorgd voor de Nederlandse St. Gregoriusvereniging. Eveneens op alle niveaus verzorgt hij lessen in solfège en muziektheorie, met als bijzondere kwaliteit het opleiden van leerlingen voor het toelatingsexamen conservatorium. Hij geeft tevens pianoles.
Maurice van Elven is als docent verbonden aan de ‘Muziekschool Amsterdam’ en heeft daarnaast een privépraktijk.

Music teacher
As a music teacher Maurice van Elven gives organ lessons at all levels, from beginners to coaching for both Protestant and Roman Catholic amateur church organists. In addition to teaching at the Muziekschool Noord (1974-1997) and the Muziekschool Amsterdam (1975 to the present), he has given courses in church organ playing for the Nederlandse St. Gregoriusvereniging. He gives lessons in solfeggio and music theory at all levels, with special attention to the preparation of students for conservatory entrance examinations. He also gives piano lessons.
Maurice van Elven is a teacher at the ‘Muziekschool Amsterdam’ and also has a private teaching practice.

Koordirigent
Als koordirigent is Maurice van Elven, behalve aan de Thomascantorij (zie onder Kerkmusicus), verbonden aan het PROSA Vocaal Ensemble. Dit meerstemmig vrouwenkoor telt momenteel tien leden. Hoewel PROSA in de eerste tien jaar van haar bestaan regelmatig tijdens kerkelijke vieringen te horen was (Tichelkerk, zie boven) heeft het behalve het daarvoor bestemde geestelijke repertoire (a capella en met orgel) reeds vanaf de oprichting ook een wereldlijk repertoire (a capella en met piano) gehad. De naam PROSA (PRO-profaan, SA-sacraal) geeft dit reeds aan.
Het PROSA Vocaal Ensemble repeteert in principe twee maal per maand op donderdagavond in de basisschool ´De Catamaran´, Bentinckstraat 78, 1051 GN Amsterdam. Het geeft één of twee maal per jaar een concert m.m.v. van organiste Gonny van der Maten ofwel m.m.v. pianiste Magrietha van der Haar. De laatste concerten vonden plaats in de St. Pancratiuskerk in Amsterdam-Sloten (2011), de St. Martinuskerk in Zaltbommel (2010) en de Maarten Lutherkerk in Amsterdam-Zuid (2012). Incidenteel verleent het PROSA Vocaal Ensemble medewerking aan kerkelijke vieringen.
Het repertoire van het PROSA Vocaal Ensemble vermeldt werken van o.a. Lassus, Byrd, Schütz, Mendelssohn, Fauré, Britten, Poulenc, Holst, Rachmaninow, Lutoslawsky.

Choir conductor
As a choir conductor Maurice van Elven works with the Thomascantorij (see under church musician), and also with the PROSA Vocaal Ensemble. This three-part women’s choir currently has ten members. Although PROSA regularly took part in church services during the first ten years of its existence (Tichelkerk, see above), it has, in addition to its sacred repertoire (unaccompanied and with organ), also built up from the very beginning a non-religious repertoire (unaccompanied and with piano). The name PROSA (PRO — profane, SA — sacred) reflects this.
The PROSA Vocaal Ensemble rehearses in principle twice a month on Thursday evenings in the basisschool ´De Catamaran´, Bentinckstraat 78, 1051 GN Amsterdam. It gives concerts once or twice a year together with the organist Gonny van der Maten or the pianist Magrietha van der Haar. Recent concerts took place in the St. Pancratiuskerk in Amsterdam-Sloten (2011), the St. Martinuskerk in Zaltbommel(2010) and the Maarten Lutherkerk in Amsterdam (2012). PROSA Vocaal Ensemble also takes part occasionally in church services.

Als componist schreef Maurice van Elven voornamelijk orgelmuziek en vocale muziek. Zie elders op deze site enkele notenvoorbeelden. As a composer Maurice van Elven has written chiefly organ music and vocal music. See elsewhere on this site for some notational examples.
